A Midsummer Night's Dream Project Reflection:
In this project, we practiced and performed the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as wrote an essay about either the love in Shakespeare, or the authority figures in Shakespeare. I played the character Snug and the lion; I also did sound design, this included finding music to use for the play, and making sure it played at the right times during the play.
I connected to this project through seeing how Shakespeare portrays gender in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I thought this was very interesting, because the female characters from Athens had a lot less power and freedom than the ones who lived in the forest. It was also interesting that once the people from Athens got into the forest, the women seemed to be more powerful than they were. They by no means completely powerful, but definitely more so than they were in Athens.
I found the acting part of this project difficult, I have never acted before, and doing something like that front of people is extremely hard for me. I did persevere through this, and by the end of the project when we performed the play, I was excited and happy to be a part of the play. A lot of the time, I don’t think I will enjoy doing something I’ve never done before; but I found that I had a lot of fun, and would be willing to do something else like this in the future.
I learned that if I try something new, I will probably enjoy it. This is what happened with acting, I have never acted before, but I really enjoyed it. I didn’t think I enjoyed performing anything in front of people, but I realized that acting is pretty fun, and I would definitely be part of a project like this in the future.
People still gravitate towards William Shakespeare’s works because even though it is four hundred years later, the issues in his plays are still prevalent today. They are not the exact same issues as they were, but they can have the same results no matter what started it. People do anything for love, and they always have; just because it’s four hundred years later, these issues are still seen everyday.
